i just want to rant. i swear you need a freakin masters degree from MIT to work some of this computer sh*t these days. i bought a wireless router and adapter for my laptop and spent close to the whole day screwing around with this router and it still isnt hooked up. i called the computer store where i bought it and they were somewhat helpful. i called Netgear, which is the company that makes the router i bought and talked to some dude in india for an hour and he wasnt helpful at all. the guy at the computer store made it sound like i just hooked it up and i would be online in 15 minutes. i am most likely going to take it back on monday. i just dont need the hassle. i thought it would be cool to be able to take the laptop to work and surf the net on my break when im working two shifts, or be able to surf the net in my room, but it just isnt worth all of the time i have invested n it.

I’ve had my D-Link wireless router for a good year now. Set-up was simple. First thing you learn is do NOT run the shit software that’s included on the CD-ROM. It installs a bunch of nonsense that is NOT needed. You do not need to install any software to configure a router – you simply hook it up, launch a browser, type in the IP address of the router (to find it, look in the manual or go to a command prompt and type IPCONFIG. The number next to “default gateway” is the IP of the router). Login using the default username which in most cases is “admin” with no PW, or admin for username and PW. Then you can configure your broadband type… cable or DSL. And set security features like WEP encryption so unauthorized fools can’t connect and steal your bandwidth.

Every router should come with a manual…always follow the “advanced” set-up. Some manuals even have a special section that’s worded something like “installing and configuring the router WITHOUT loading the software CD.” Follow THOSE instructions and you should be up and running in 15 minutes. If not, return the junk. Personally I never was very fond of Netgear. Also stay away from Linksys. Ever since Cisco bought them out, their products have turned to crap.

Netgear aren’t great - ours wear out like every 6 months.

i bought this USB thing that the guy at the computer store said would work in my laptop. a Wireless G USB Adapter is what it says on the box.
