Re: weird food habits
I don’t thoroughly chew my food, which would be one reason I’m overweight :-\ :-\
Re: weird food habits
My food is not allowed to touch. Unless it is food that can be mixed.
Re: weird food habits
….that has nothing to do with how much you eat.
Re: weird food habits
I dip my eggo waffles in Dr.Pepper. I am almost positive that counts as weird.
Re: weird food habits
It’s actually healthier to eat that way… If you drink while you’re eating, you don’t absorb all the nutrients from your food somehow. It’s worst with soda, but I believe any beverage will do it to some extent.
Re: weird food habits
Also, the more you chew some foods the more efficiently you absorb various nutrients. If you’re just swallowing things back you may be taking up some things (sugars) quickly and still requiring others.
As for drinking; the problem is the dilution of your digestive juices. That would indicate, to me at least (I’ll have to do some googling), that acidic drinks such as sodas are probably better than plain water, as part of the problem is the dilution of stomach acid.
Re: weird food habits
when talking abut being overweight you have to take in matabolism too guys because i know people who are almost always eating that are really skinny so lets not forget that
Re: weird food habits
Umm…not to be insulting but I think you blindsided the point there. Most of us are aware of how overweight people get overweight in the first place, and I just didn’t realize that chewing, or lack thereof was a factor to that.
Kita’s point I can kind of see but Nemo’s point, whether or not it’s true, doesn’t really involve being overweight so much as it does not getting enough nutrients from the food you eat, not as much as most other things at least.
For me, I usually don’t have much in the way of preferences. Tuna (yes, ironic considering I’ve had Raw squid and liked it, but I don’t like Tuna), Spaghetti, Beets and Olives are pretty much the only things I will not eat. Oh, and beef Jerky, though that’s not really food.
To a certain extent, I don’t have much self control over what I eat, which is partly one of the reasons I’m overweight a bit. I’ve loaded sandwiches from subway up with all sorts of really bad things for me simply because it’s free and no one cared. I once made a sandwich with Philly steak, pepperoni, chicken teriyaki, Ham, Salami, Bacon and two cups of the queso cheese from the Buffalo Wild Wings next door. It was the most awesome sandwich I’ve ever had, and I seriously frigging hated myself for eating all of it that night :P.
Re: weird food habits
If you’re short on various nutrients you’ll eat more and if you end up having to eat too much… Ie. you don’t chew your meat, but you eat it in a sticky sauce full of fat and sugar. You get your calories, but you’ll need to be wolfing down more to get your protein.
As it happens, though, not chewing your food is likely to make your calorie uptake less efficient and so the overriding factor would be that people not chewing are tending to eat faster and so eating more.
(There’s a lengthy New Scientist article on it if you’re interested).
