The hell is wrong with these people?

Cute, Soft, and VERY, very sweet. Great music video and great song to the awesome and (unfortunately) final movie of Miyazaki.

The American version, with Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas. I died a little inside after hearing part of this.

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

I don’t get it. Both are simple kids songs sung by high-pitched kids. Do you just like the Japanese one more because you don’t understand the words or something?

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

Ooh, maybe someone will suggest Miyazaki is getting ‘raped’, even though he’s getting a large sum of money and has to personally approve all aspects of the English dub.

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

The lyrics aren’t the issue. For one, I do understand it. Secondly, even if I didn’t, the second song is a translated version of that very song with a slight re-organization of the lyrics and a few additions (The spelling of Ponyo, which is retarded considering spelling it in English is five letters and in Japanese it’s three Katakana).

The problem is what the song now sounds like. They’ve turned it from a simple kids song into a pop-cliche song akin to Ke$ha or Kanye West. The synthesizer is terrible, the voice alteration that makes a person’s voice fluctuate up and down in tone rapidly is even worse, not to mention the pre-existing hate of both Jonas and Cyrus are definitely present.

Basically, lemme put it this way. There’s another song for Ponyo out there, it’s an American translated version of the first youtube video, but it’s translated and nothing more. The actual musical part of the song is still the same, and that I could deal with. This is absolute and utter garbage.

Ok…no.

Studio Ghibli which is run by Miyazaki is a subset company of Walt Disney. They own what he owns. He can make the movie, get credit for it and everything, but if Disney says “We want that in America, we’re going to translate it” he doesn’t have a choice. Granted, he does have some influence considering he’s the creator of the show and people translating it need his mind to properly translate it.

I really doubt anyone who helped create the original Ponyo, including Miyazaki, could like the garbage that is that remix.

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

Ghibli is not a sub anything of Disney. Disney bought the US (and possibly English language?) rights to Ghibli films, that’s all. It remains an independent studio.

Also, you clicked on a REMIXED version of the English language song. Here’s the real version:

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

Right. And as I said, one of his conditions for selling Disney the American distribution rights was final approval of the dub.

If you read my second post, I already state that I know that my link is a remix song and there is a regular version too, which I’m fine with.

However, the Remix is in the movie too. And it is still REALLY gay.

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

There isn’t a Japanese remix and the point wasn’t to compare or contrast them. It was to remark that Frankie Jonas, Noah Cyrus and anyone else involved utterly destroyed the original song by making the remix.

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

In addition to the remix issue debated above, this may be a case where you need to see the movie to get it. I personally didn’t care for Ponyo as much as some other Miyazaki films, but with My Neighbor Totoro, I have the theme song on my MP3 server. It’s really just a silly kids song, but every time I hear it it reminds me of the delightful, upbeat and slightly surreal film. If it wasn’t for seeing the movie, I would probably dismiss the song.

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

I’m so glad someone else thinks this. It’s not even that they got Disney test-tube babies to do it, they were charming in the film itself but… gah. I had no idea there was an original, thanks for that old sport!

But what’s so bad about the remix being gay, Jaclyn? POLITICS

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

The idea that my usage of gay is somehow politically incorrect to gay people despite that not even being the context and despite the word gay having more than one meaning that doesn’t necessarily conform to homosexuality….that’s an argument all on its own and one I’ve created an entire thread for. Feel free to use that if you want to debate it further.

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

I could’ve sworn you disagreed with me before on this issue, but then all I see is content removed so I can’t really verify.

In any case…yeah, slang is slang, the whole “Knock it off” bullshit to saying “That is so gay” is just that, bullshit. In our society, slang is fucked up to the point where many words mean the exact opposite in slang than what they mean legally. Bad means good, “The shit” means it’s awesome, Fuckin A is a statement of agreement….

You don’t hear me bending over backwards fighting a relatively stupid PC war over things like Jon Stewart claiming “Diapers are an inherently funny object” or Stephen Lynch singing a joking/insulting song about a girl he loved he found out had a penis (slightly less related due to it being about a hermaphrodite, not a transgender/sexual, but still).

Funny thing is, the gayest man I have ever met whom I work with at Subway, his favorite phrase is “That is so gay.”

Re: The hell is wrong with these people?

Stephen Lynch’s song, by comparison, is Disney stuff. lol

Umm….have you -heard- the song by lynch? The innuendo of “When I try to please her I get poked in the eye” is probably dirtier than any of those lyrics. Hell the song starts with “She’s part girl, she’s part boy, she’s got parts everyone can enjoy.” This is a guy who made an entire song about enjoying the inheritance he’s going to get when his grandfather dies so he goes ahead and kills him to speed up the process, and a song about a homosexual satan that loves to club baby seals and watch fox news.

I’m sure if I disagreed it was about some other aspect of the post. Nothing used to get me more riled up than those “Knock it off” commercials. I finally resorted to using the mute button.

We just got rid of our cable :stuck_out_tongue:
