No idea why the left side almost always seems to come out blurry. Do I need to clean the surface?
There are three separate little things going on here, 4 counting the background.

I prefer the second, mainly because Radiohead clinches it.
As for the blur: it looks to me like your using a ring bound pad and the blur comes from the fact that the binding is holding one side of the pad slightly higher from the bed of the scanner meaning that it’s out of focus.

Oh, the one on the far right is about http://www.cricut.com (there was an infomercial about it on one morning), the one in the top-center is about telemarketers, and the bottom one is just a thing where I took lyrics from a song and doodled stuff.
