So, I just found out tapatalk has made some changes again that this time I’m going to address publicly:
First, everyone using Tapatalk should visit the Me tab and find the Public Profile section under settings (not the similarly named edit profile link on the Me tab) and turn off the switch for this forum or anyone using Tapatalk can see you’re a member here. More importantly it will show your usernames on any other forums you use if you also don’t turn those off.
Second, for the love of $deity, turn off the Tapatalk signature in your app settings. I’ve added a task to the board that will start removing them automatically anyway, but this just makes things easier.
Finally, that fucking “chat room” they recently added is absolutely fucking not official or in any way supported!. This forum does not currently have a chat room and is unlikely to in the future due to the lack of use when it did have one.
The original version (up to version 2, I think) of tapatalk was great. It was an improvement on web-based forum navigation and made it really easy to quickly keep up with lots of forums. But the various redesigns and insistence on using a tapatalk account made it useless. I guess it’s their monetization strategy - get people hooked on the app, then introduce accounts and ads that can target on those accounts and other user behavior.
Sadly, for SMF there really isn’t an alternative. I mean I could write an API and a really shitty Android app, but that would be about it. Developing for iOS is just cost prohibitive as I’d have to have an Enterprise dev license to deploy the app as the standard license restricts the number of manual deployments and Apple would never approve a standalone app for this forum for the App Store. Then there’s also the minor issue of needing someone to buy me a Mac to develop the app on
Yeah, 2 was the last version with separate paid and free versions. 4 was when the convergence started and they started bolting on all the stupid shit.
In all fairness, you can turn off most of those notifications in the app settings.
The gay/diaper thing is very simple. Just looking at the public profiles of some of the people using it on here there’s a good chunk that have LGBTQ forums on their list as well, so the recommendations algorithm is [annoyingly] working in that regard.
One thing that annoys me about the mobile site is that links in the forum always take you to the full version… But yeah, screw taptalk.
Weird. It should stay on the mobile version if you’re already on it and click a link to something on this board unless there isn’t a mobile version…
Is the issue with links on the mobile version going to the full version of the site restricted to links within posts? That is, if someone links to a story on the forum in the story search, then that link will land on the full version, but all other links go to the mobile version as expected.
Based on the testing I was doing, yeah, that’s the main issue. There are some pages that simply don’t have mobile versions and they’ll go to the full site as well, but most of those are pages you wouldn’t normally access on the mobile site anyway.
The weird thing is that when you choose to use the mobile site it stores that as part of your session so there’s literally no reason it should be falling back to the desktop site.
