Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

I can’t go into specifics at this time, but a security issue with the Tapatalk plugins push notifications has made it necessary to disable it until a patch is available.

If you have been using Tapatalk to access the forums from your mobile device, please use http://m.abdlstoryforum.info to access the site instead. It will automatically redirect you to the mobile friendly version of the site. I have submitted a bug report to the Tapatalk developers so hopefully they will have a fix soon.

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

Sorry to be posting this update, but due to changes I was just recently made aware of along with the security issue with the push notifications Tapatalk will not be enabled on this forum again. They have chosen to force their advertising and branding on forums even if they previously disabled it unless they now pay $10, so fuck them.

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

I tried Tapatalk once - found it obnoxious, especially the incessant notifications like “daily picks”.

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

You can actually turn those off in the apps settings, assuming you can find them :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

Since no more Tapatalk, can you suggest any other similar apps? I liked the way Tapatalk laid everything out. This forum is the only reason I used Tapatalk, even though there are a couple others I visited from time to time.

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

Unfortunately, for SMF there really aren’t any alternatives, at least not that are actually possible to implement because I don’t own the hardware necessary to build the iOS app, and then there is the fact Apple would never allow it in the app store anyway.

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

I don’t want notifications about my participation in this fetish forum. Tapatalk scared me enough not to try it. Imagine if I am showing off vacation pics and a notification about ABDL Story Forum comes up?

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

If that happened then it would be because you didn’t take advantage of the very simple ability to turn them off in the app or at the OS level in Android or iOS

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

Just an update. It may be possible to re-enable tapatalk. I’ve been digging through the source of the plugin itself and the SMF function references. The problem is actually being caused by the fact that Tapatalk is hooking into the wrong function to determine if/when to send notifications. It should be hooking into the function that is called to send email notifications (which would perform the proper security checks). it is instead hooking into the function that is called whenever a new post is inserted into the database, and this is searching the smf_log_notify table and just blindly sending notifications for any notifications listed there without performing a separate check to make sure the user has access.

There are two ways I see forward if the developers can’t/won’t fix the problem. The first would be to manually adjust which hook calls the notifcation function. That way it would at least only get called if someone was on the notifications list of the topic and has access. The other way would be to leave it using the existing hook (necessary for a specific feature to work) but implement a rather expensive function call.

Why is the second method expensive? Well basically SMF doesn’t provide a “Hey, I have this id_member and id_topic. Can this guy with a subscription currently read the topic?” function and the point at which the hook Tapatalk gets called from is called too late to obtain that information in a non-intensive way.

Re: Tapatalk access has been disabled due to a security issue.

Good news folks. Tapatalk will be getting re-enabled as soon as the next plugin update is released. It includes a fix that does cause a very tiny amount of slowness when posting with Tapatalk, but I hope no one is silly enough to try posting stories from Tapatalk
