Has anyone ever been there? Did you like the city? What did you think of it?
Have you ever seen any movies that have taken place there like Benny & Joon, Vision Quest, and Mozart and the Whale. Those are my three favorite movies because of Spokane.
The town real din’t even play a role in the movie other then being the prime shooting location. I don’t think they ever said the towns name or if it was even on a paper on the movie itself.
What did I like about the city? - - hmmm - - The big red wagon!
I don’t really like living in a city, but Spokane was better than another small city I lived near, Dayton. I liked the outskirts of Dayton, but not the city. I liked the city of Spokane, but there really wasn’t anything on the outskirts.
There is a lot of towns nearby it. Don’t forget Cour D’ Alene, it’s a resort town I hear and then there is Silverwood which is up in SandPoint and there is Mt. Spokane and there is a zoo nearby that is out of Spokane. It’s in Newport. They filmed a Mozart and the Whale scene there when Isabelle and Donald are at the zoo and Isabelle is making animals sounds to the monkey.
Spokane was mentioned in Benny & Joon on Joon’s medical alert card and in the papers Dr. Garvey has on her when Benny was seeing her.
In the movie script, the story took place in Seattle. They could have pretended they were in Seattle but because the director wanted the movie to be realistic, it could be why he kept the name Spokane. He wanted the movie to take place there because it has lot of trains going through it.
I hope more movies will continue being filmed in Spokane and I hope another one will be shot at Ferguson’s. Ferguson’s is a name of a restaurant in Spokane where Benny & Joon was shot where Johnny Depp does the roll dance and the shame about raisins scene and where Benny goes for tapioca when they didn’t have anymore.
Has stores there. Two malls, one outside of town. Has lots of parks, has a zoo nearby, they have lot of stores too, stores you find in any city. They have a place called The White Elephant and they still had the expo World’s Fair merchandise Spokane held in 1974. I think they’re out of them now. They even sell old toys there from the 1980’s and 1990’s that have never been out of the box and they are affordable to buy.
They have this big huge Radio Flyer wagon in the park in downtown and it’s a slide.
But the city is small and there isn’t much to do except for the zoo, shopping, going to Riverfront Park which is downtown, looking around downtown and looking in a store called Boo Radley’s. They sell cool stuff there. I like going in there but things are expensive. They have Manito Park which has classical gardens there which reminds me of the Portland Japanese Garden up on the hill.
Of course there is the Benny & Joon tour. It’s free, all you need is a car and go and see those locations and eat at Ferguson’s cafe where the movie was filmed, go to RiverFront Park and see the spot where Johnny Depp did the Buster Keaton moves. Go see the neighborhood where their house is at, see the apartment Ruthie lived in, see the garage there where Benny worked at. It really is a car place and they kept the name the same for the movie because the owner’s name was also Benny but he changed it to Benny’s Automotive Service. He had it closed for a while and then he reopened it. I saw it. I wonder how long he had it closed for.
