Something I noticed

How come every diaper story has a best friend character named Brittany? Of the course of the story things get rocky, she gets in fights with the protagonist, they see each other as sisters, etc.

Seriously.

Every. Single. One.

Is there something that every abdl writer has that goes through their head where they are like, “Okay, she needs to struggle with hiding a diaper at a sleepover. Who’s party should it be? Brittany sounds like a good name.”

Re: Something I noticed

I have no idea. I’ve never used “Brittany” as the name of any character in any of my stories.

Perhaps there’s a stigma associated with the name? Perhaps “Brittany” just invokes the image of a rich, spoiled, perfect-body blond teenage cheerleader with a serious attitude problem?

Re: Something I noticed

Is it really that common? I remember seeing the name a lot (both in the stories and the titles) but I haven’t seen any Brittanys in any of the stories I’ve read recently. It’s an alright name, definitely a lot better than any of those has-to-have-been-made-up-on-the-spot names I see a so much more of lately.

Re: Something I noticed

The most common name I see is Alli/Allie/Ally. Admittedly, I’m guilty of this one as well; my first AB story featured a girl by that name.

Re: Something I noticed

Brittany was a supporting character in Ariel Crawford, there’s one in the trashy mess over at sddr.us, The Curiosity of Girls has about 27 characters so naturally a Brittany was gonna show up there at some point. This is the one I reference in Harmony Hills, which now I am regretting as this could’ve been a more fun reference to play with. I am pretty sure there is one in the secret treehouse story, but that doesn’t sound right since there was a Brinley in that and no way the author would be dumb enough to have a Brinley and a Brittany. I started reading Raquel’s Only Wish today, which is where I noticed it there as Brittany is a big character in that too.

This one I don’t see too often…. but there is one in the aeformetioned sddr.us trash so go figure.

Re: Something I noticed

I’d venture a guess that either we read very different stories, or we’re both wrong, neither of those names are as common as we perceive them to be.

Re: Something I noticed

Actually, Brittany (and some odd spelling variations) are actually pretty common, although the search function won’t find them as they’re way too old to be in the index due to an SMF limitation. Ally is less common, but appears more than you’d expect. That one obviously took a bit of time to search out in the decrypted data dump I’m working on since I had to eliminate false positives of one common spelling

I know a set of twins who would resent the implication their parents are dumb based on that statement  For the record though, definitely no Brittany (with any common spelling) in that story

Re: Something I noticed

It’s a very common name, especially for girls born about 1990-2000. I don’t think there’s any reason more than that. There are a lot of Emily’s, Ally’s and Katie’s as well.

By the way I don’t think that the story at sddr.us is any more trashy than The Curiosity was. In fact, I rather enjoy that story. I don’t care that much for the Brittany character in that one thought.

Re: Something I noticed

Ugh. Need to change a character name in my current project. :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Something I noticed

I’ve never noticed a Brittany. Mandy shows up a lot.

Re: Something I noticed

These are definitely the most common I’ve seen, especially Jessica. I’ve read too many bad stories with a main character named Jessica, it’s close to becoming an instant sign to stop reading (although I admit that it shouldn’t be as Jessica probably has to have been the most popular girl name this past century considering that it topped the charts for decades at a time with only a few brief interregnums in-between).

Re: Something I noticed

Common names are going to be common in diaper stories, it just makes sense. If you give a character a particularly odd name you have to give them the odd features to match and, for the most part, people want everyman characters as a progtagonist (although, logically, a person’s name really says more about the parents than the child).

I think a more interesting point is the permanent claiming of a name by an author of sufficient fame. I rarely see “Ashley” or “Ariel” used as a character’s name in diaper ficition, I assume because the author doesn’t want to be accused of stealing from previous work. Although, frankly, it’s an incestuous branch of literature that is completely evolved from - as far as I know - Ashley’s Diaper Adventures.

I tend to try and use names that aren’t in use in stories currenting popping up on the board but I also try to steer clear of names I’ve used before. If a name was used by another author, but it was awhile ago, it doesn’t really bother me to use it. Although, now that I think of it, I consider the following names off-limits for a main character:

-Ashley and Ariel
-Tiffany
-Sakura
-Penny or Penelope (Cause’ Penni)
-Madison (not because Madison’s Secret is good, which I don’t think it is, but because it’s kind of known as an ADA follow-up)
and now Lily

There’s other name’s that I think invoke distinctive characters within our genre, but they are names I would never personally use, so I don’t have to log them as excluded.

Re: Something I noticed

Names I have used:
Corinna
Sara
Vickie, friend was Elizabeth.
Lisa, friend was Becky
Alison
Bridget/Angela, friend was Lia. Other girls include friend Ami, enemy Julia, roommate Flower, and Ami’s roommate Anise
Mary
Beth, friend was Silvia. Dominant mother was Violet. Babysitter was Lillie.
Nora, friend is Kara. Other diapered include Melody, Darla, Bella, Veronica, and Cassie. Scholarship coordinator is Elizabeth as well.

I think the names I use are varied. I have a lot of alternate spellings as well. The only common name I have is Lillie which is similar to Whetoric’s example of Lily. I am surprised I don’t have a Jessica or a Jennifer since back in high school every other girl had the name Jessica, Jennifer, or Sarah. I could bullshit knowing people by just guessing between Jessica or Jennifer.

Re: Something I noticed

I don’t write a lot of AB fiction, admittedly, but when I was doing more creative writing I actually bought a baby name book to use as a reference and springboard for character names.

Re: Something I noticed

I like to play around with names. I doubt anyone noticed, but the “prologue” to my current project (“A Little Legal Issue”) was chock full of names with loaded meanings.

Re: Something I noticed

Whistles innocently while hiding The Sphere Eh, it’s about who you are online or who you pretend to be, and I pretend to be Sasha, so the main characters avatar is named Sasha.

Re: Something I noticed

Yeah, no…that would be weird.

Re: Something I noticed

Is that a dig a kenkrus? Everyone of his stories was similar and he had similar character names.

Re: Something I noticed

Yeah, SallyKat does that sort of thing as well, from what i’ve seen.

Re: Something I noticed

Oh no. Does this mean I should change the names of the recurring characters in the series I’m working on? ;D
