RIP J.D. Salinger

The reclusive Catcher in the Rye author has died at age 91.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

Also, Howard Zinn, the activist/historian.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

I was never a fan of Salinger and always thought Catcher in the Rye was about a pretentious spoiled brat as opposed to any other theory of holden caufield, but nevertheless, RIP.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

Things that influence other things don’t affect my opinion of the latter “thing.” Otherwise I probably would have hated V for Vendetta (based on 1984 of course) and any other movie with 1984 influences.

In any case, Donnie Darko is a far different story than Catcher in the rye. Even if the character type of Donnie and Holden are fairly similar (and yes I agree they really are), the stories themselves are far enough apart that it’s not a fair comparison…

I think the best way to say it is Donnie may have been a dick but he had reason to be one, and had a goal ahead of him.

Holden seemed to be a dick without meaning or purpose and hated indiscriminately and people disguised that fact by calling him a “Free thinker.”

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

I remember really liking Catcher in the Rye in high school, but I haven’t read it since then.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

I read it in France one year to avoid speaking to my family. All I really remember is the constant and various use of the word ‘bastard’.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

Catcher In the Rye tormented me during gcse’s Bluddy hated it, especially the anti-hero Holden, complete and utter twat, and I remember hating Salinger for writing such annoyance, that said I reread it last year, and actually kinda liked it. I think it would be better if they hadn’t of examined set it. Still RIP Salinger.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

On an unrelated note, I call dibs on movie rights when Catcher enters the public domain in January 2080.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

If you are still alive by then you deserve it. I was always unimpressed with Catcher although it was a great time to be an Amazon vendor and just so happen to have 15 copies of the book. All old Salinger had to was die. I was wonder if there is anything interesting in the safe?

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

Yeah, you know like in that movie Conspiracy Theory. And not anymore I had 15 copies of Catcher in the Rye.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

Because his death remotely implied a potential shortage? Bizarre.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

Usually, when someone noteworthy dies, it results in a renewed/increased interest in their work.

Re: RIP J.D. Salinger

I know it increases interest, what I meant to imply is that it is highly unlikely that there was a shortage of Catcher copies.
