Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

At least that seems to be how things are going these days.

I technically could have put this in Venting Anger but it’s a situation that doesn’t make me mad, just annoys the crap out me because it shouldn’t happen.

So if you read the Venting Anger thread with any regularity you probably saw that around Christmas a friend and I worked together to get a domain name for a mutual friend’s website he was working on. Said friend then offed himself leaving me with the domain. This just background info and you really don’t need to comment on it.

Anyway, since that time I have gotten regular offers from people trying to sell me other ABDL related domains. Not a big deal, it’s always happened since I registered this one, it just got more active in recent months because the one I got stuck with is a .US domain and thus you can’t have private registrations as there is a legal requirement to have your real name and contact information for those domains.

So, anyway, recently I updated the email address on that one (this one has a private registration these days FYI) for all contacts to noidontwantyourfuckingdomain@abdlstoryforum.info. Amazingly, I’ve received not one, not two, not three, but four offers of ABDL related domains at that address in the last hour. How can you see that address, take the time to copy and paste it, and yet not comprehend what it actually says? I’m half tempted to respond to the next one and tell them I’ll take it as long as they give me $240 to take it off their hands :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

Or just route that address to /dev/null. You know how this works people have bots scripts and other infernal spawn of Laurence Canter. or you could set up goatse ascii art autoresponder, or just submit them to DNSBLs as a spammer. Anyway you should use such things for your own amusement

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

So? Use procmail to filter out the annoying stuff and your golden, a real address + stupid people filters

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

Time for a reality check: They only iway to filter these emails? You’d end up blocking legitimate emails from the registrar and ICANN as well which is, you know, kind of a bad thing on multiple levels. But actually we can ignore that detail because of a more important detail: This domains email service is provided by Google Apps. I’m neither stupid enough, nor bat shit insane enough to host them myself.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

Why not? I host my own mail server for my domain. I also do it on a Raspberry Pi.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

For this domain? I’m not even going to dignify that one with an actual response…

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

I was just curious. I want to know why running a mail server might be a bad idea. I haven’t run into any issues on my domain.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

It depends on your mail volume and the number of users you have, if it’s just you and family members, sure the Pi would be a good choice but for this domain you wouldn’t want to run a mailserver with less than 2GB of ram dedicated soley to processing mail. Much better to let Google do it. Because mail is a pain in the arse

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

It’s not, except in some unusual circumstances, which very much apply to this board’s domain. I’ll address that in a moment though.

First I should explain, the board’s emails are handled internally, except for a few domains where they’re offloaded to SparkPost due to issues with those providers not accepting emails directly from the server despite having properly configured SPF records. The irony being that Gmail is one of the providers that I have to treat like special snowflakes.

If it wasn’t for the amount of spam I get on a daily basis, actually a Pi would be perfectly capable of handling the mail volume. Which brings me to where an important distinction needs to be made. Incoming emails, and those generated by the only human with accounts on the domain are hosted through Google Apps. All other outgoing emails are handled by a local Postfix install that either delivers the emails directly or routes them SparkPost for the special snowflake providers.

Postfix will only accept incoming emails that are the result of in-band bounces, or are specifically targeted to the mandatory postmaster, abuse, and legal aliases at notifications.$domain, which alias to the issues@$domain address. The norply address technically aliases to /dev/null, although actually maildrop (procmail sucks for this job :P) saves emails that appear to be replies to certain types of notifications and then notifies me to check the mailbox they’re saved to in case I need to notify the sender they screwed up.

Oh, and for those wondering, between the various mailboxes I use for this board on it’s domain, I get roughly 900 spam messages a day, and those are just the ones Google doesn’t outright reject. Last time I dealt with support about an email issue they informed me that they bounce around ~1300 per day according the stats they keep.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

I am the sole user and rarely get e-mail on my server, including spam. I mainly use the mail server t back up e-mail from other sources in mbox format on my server. But for low volume stuff I use it for, the Pi is for mail, gopher, and websites using https.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

I was willing to believe you until you said gopher :stuck_out_tongue:

I kid, I kid.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

I really do run a gopher server. No one has ever visited it. My gopher site is about the gopher protocol and how sad it is that no one uses gopher anymore. I don’t think it is searchable in Archie though. :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

i’d be worried if it was. Archie was for FTP. Veronica and Jughead were the gopher search engines :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

You’re kidding, right? Nope, I googled it. They were really called that.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

The said part is I didn’t have to look it up at all. I actually knew that off the top of my head.

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

I run a gopher server locally it basically parses and does article scrapimg so I can get my news in glorious 7 bit ascii

Re: Reading comprehension: Not Required for Internet Usage

It was HTTP before HTTP was cool.

Actually the HTTP protocol was based on the original Gopher protocol.
