I was just thinking about this and I’m curious as to what the members here think.
In my opinion, this day has become pointless. The meaning and point has been lost over time and this day has become nothing more than another day where students have off from school, some employers give their employees the day off, banks/post offices/etc. are closed.
I wouldn’t say Christmas has lost its meaning. If anything, modern society has wrestled the meaning of Yule back away from the Catholics who ruined it for everyone in the first place. It’s an excuse to party in the middle of winter. Drink excessively, eat excessively, and be happy you’re still alive. That’s what Yule always was, dating back several centuries before the “reason for the season” was born.
I moved to the South and where there are a lot of black people. I just went to the mall and everyone was working or shopping on their day off. Not a lot of reflecting on who Martin Luther King was. Most of the retail spaces had black people working, so I guess it was just another day to work on the holiday that most upper income people get off.
I live in a ghetto-ish part of town here, and you can take it to the bank the locals don’t give two shits about what holiday this is, only whether they’re getting a paid day off work or getting time-and-a-half to be there.
