So, the Pats traded Mike Vrabel and Matt Cassel to the Chefs. I can understand trading Vrabel (I don’t like it, but he’s older and it makes sense to move him while he still has value), but I DO NOT GET trading Matt Cassel. Okay, sure, Tom Brady is going to be back, fine. But last year ought to have taught someone the value of having a TESTED backup, which Cassel is now. Dude won 11 games last year.
What really cooks my noodle is what they got in return for a solid and popular LB/TE (Vrabel) and a proven winning QB (one of the rarest commodities in the NFL). The Chefs are sending a 2nd round pick in the draft (34th overall). Good Lord, Cassel alone ought to have been worth a first round pick (number 3 overall).
Good luck to the Chefs next year, and tough break for Matt Cassel. No Randy Moss, no Wes Welker, so I don’t see him doing next year what he did this year. He’ll be good, but after going 11-5, going 5-11 is gonna hurt his pride.
I doubt very much it was the Kraft’s involved in this trade. However, it still doesn’t make much sense to me to put the franchise tag on a player and then trade him for a second round pick alone. On the other hand, the Pats’ front office has proved to be pretty good at talent evaluation, so I guess Brady is completely healthy and his backup is ready to win 11 games, just in case.
I’m having a hard time picturing Bill Belichik saying “Sure, Scott, you can have Matt Cassel as a going away present, and hey, I’ll throw in Vrabel too, 'cause that’s just the kind of guy I am.”
Yeah, the Chefs was intentional because of the Snickers ad. I haven’t called them the Chiefs in years lol.
And yes, the Kraft’s are the owners of New England, Robert and his son Jonathon. While Bill Belichick does make a lot of the decisions concerning roster moves (no true GM on the Pats, the last being, ironically, Scott Pioli, who is the GM now of KC), Robert Kraft DOES have final say. And I don’t get why he’d let Cassel go for so little.
Oh, and I meant to say ‘bake my noodle’, not cook. Matrix reference.
