Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

I got fired…that’s right, terminated, canned, fired out of a cannon into the sun!

So the story goes like this, I made a comment that was not racially insensitive in any way, however it was taken as a racist comment by a customer regardless simply because the comment was made to an Egyptian (and one important factor, the Egyptian coworker found nothing racist about it either and did not care that I said it, only a customer complained). I don’t feel like arguing about the comment so I’m not going to disclose what I said. Suffice it to say, I will hold that the comment was not offensive and people are overreacting, and I’ll hold that to the grave.

I was also fired for other complaints made by employees. When I asked the owner, who fired me (not the manager, the frigging owner of the franchise) if I could at least talk with him about it and see -why- I was fired, he refused. He refused to inform me of the complaints made against me, thus giving me no chance to defend myself in any way. Worse, I can’t do anything about it thanks to the At-will clause for Indiana Employment.

Oh but it gets worse, I filed for unemployment benefits because of this clusterfuck of a situation, and guess what? I don’t frigging qualify. Oh I worked there for a year alright, but I made 4200 bucks that year and wanna know how much I need for unemployment benefits? 5,000. Isn’t that just a kick in the nuts.

But there’s good news. If I’m going to get fired over some pissant statement I made, I’m taking them down with me. I’ve filed a grievance suit against Subway for being punched in the stomach, shown naked pictures of my boss by another boss, having co-workers con me into shifts I did not agree to (example being someone asked if I could work for them one day around 2PM. I told them "I can only work till about 5 or 5:30, as I’m leaving town to game with my brother today, is that alright. He says yes, I get there and find out his shift doesn’t end till 8, and he’s refusing to come back in at 6 for a two hour shift). See…if these situations were dealt with properly (i.e. if making a statement that -could- be taken as racist based solely on who I say it to and nothing else gets me fired, then these guys should have been shitcanned a long time ago), I’d have no excuse. But…because the manager who showed me naked pictures of my manager and punched me in the stomach for “snitching” on him not only still works there, but is still the general manager of a store, I’m not sitting down without a fight.

Ya know what the best part about this is? My bank requires that I work a year at a job site if I want to apply for a loan for more than $5,000, to show that I’m committed to paying it off. Nothing wrong with that, but I just hit the year mark at Subway a month ago, and I had planned on taking out a $6,000 loan for College. Well, that plan just flew out the window. Isn’t that just grand?

I seriously feel like making the Franchise Owner’s life a living hell right now. Slashed tires, broken windows, etc etc.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Sounds shitty.

Probably shouldn’t go breaking windows though.

And I’m holding back the urge to say something like “I think your comment sounded racist.” just to piss you off: I get the idea you don’t need it this time.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Ick that stinks. Give them a good fight.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

You didn’t seem to like the Subway job in the first place. However, go to your unemployment office and put in for unemployment. If Subway contests it, then appeal as many times as you can.

Don’t go breaking windows and slashing tires.

Apply somewhere else where you might want to work.

It sucks, but at least you can get the government to pay you to not work.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

@Write and left-

Actually, I kind of did like subway. Until I came out of the closet, I only ever had problems with one person. Everyone else was fine for the most part, and I got along great. Now, I didn’t like the job just because who the hell would like a fast food job, but it was much more tolerable than any other fast food place I worked.

An update-

So, I can’t file for unemployment. Suwbay didn’t challenge it, rather I just don’t qualify because I needed to have made more than 5,000 dollars in a year and I made 4200. Can’t do anything about that.

Called the indiana fair employment agency and told them about the speculated discrimination, they don’t handle that. Told me to go to the civil courts, and the civil courts told me to go to the fair employment agency. I’m guessing that because indiana is an at will work state, without undeniable proof no lawyer would touch a discrimination case against a fast food chain with a ten foot pole. To be fair, that kind of makes sense. Even the best local lawyer in the state would have trouble against a mega corporation like a fast food chain.

The security cameras we have at Subway probably could not help me. Only the most recent three days of footage is ever kept on file (which I find disturbing that not one but several of the places I’ve worked do this) and the cameras don’t even have audio recording. Not to mention, there are at least six or seven rather large blind spots for the cameras. The only thing the cameras are watching are the cash registers, and the doors.

So, I’m not going to waste my time on something that I know is not likely to provide any positive results. I might get lucky, but I’ll take my chances just getting a new job instead. I’d probably have a better chance of winning the lottery.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Unfortunately, we tried that too and they said they wouldn’t help. Actually, what they said was “The franchise owners decisions are not our business.” Basically I guess it means they don’t want to go public with something like this as it could lose them business. Lame.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Dude, that doth suck.

As for me, I don’t go to Subway anyway, prefer local chains to fast-food joints. Plus, I know all about trying to battle a large chain. I worked in '00 at a Papa John’s and I got fired cause the Akron-Area Supervisor decided I was too ‘retarded’ to make a pizza, when I was adapting to the job well. I later learned that this has happened to other employees who had disabilities.

I thought about fighting them, my dad wanted me to, but I decided not to because I knew what would happen- Fighting a large multi-national corporation is not an easy task. I think that’s why I like working for a locally owned restaurant instead of a chain, as the owner of where I work is a good man and a stand-up dude who looks after me like family.

I do hope it works out for you. Sounds like your Subway was way messed up more than that Papa John’s I worked at.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Actually, no, they aren’t

The way Subway franchises work is they operate pretty much entirely independent. Pretty much the only way to get corporate involved in a franchise dispute is for the license holder to commit a felony, fail to have required items on the menu, or fail to turn a profit for 3 quarters in a row.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

I stopped eating at Subway when I discovered a local place that made a better, cheaper sandwich with more meat. I love my replacement place to go when I really want a hoagie.

Well, tough about getting fired. You can still probably find a better job. I knew people that went from fast food place to fast food place.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

There’s a restaurant I’m gunning for that’s hiring right now. It’s called roly poly, and it’s like a mix between Taco Bell and Subway (grilled sandwich wraps using soft tortilla shells basically). I worked at Taco bell for 2 years and subway for 1, and my availability is open every day at any time except sunday. I should hope that makes me a shoe-in.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Heres to hoping you get that job.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Indeed….

Hope you get the job. Know how hard it is to find work these days.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Well, I got a new job, probably better than I could hope for actually.

It’s a full time position during third shift at a gas station. Should be fun, I haven’t officially gotten the job yet as the hiring manager needs to submit my application to a criminal background check but since nothing will pop up, I’m good to go.

No idea what the wages are though, probably minimum but I could always hope for more :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

I am currently working for less than minimum, so don’t feel too bad.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Congrats on rejoining the world of gainful employment.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Well, as they might say in my situation, eleventh time’s the charm.

(no…seriously, I’m 22 and have had 10 jobs, 8 of which I quit for my own reasons whether pathetic or justified, and the other two I was fired from, one mostly legitimate but nepotistic as well, and one entirely illegitimate).

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

I’ve only had 14 jobs, but two were for the same company. I had two internships there. Three other jobs were all working for my university in three different positions. I guess that means I worked at 11 places. I am not counting my time with temp agencies that gave me only a week or two of assignments at a time.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

At 22 I’m on 7.

And actually, I did a quick calc - I’m a bit above minimum wage. But after tax I’m almost directly equivalent on an hourly basis.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

I’ve only had one job and haven’t been able to find another. Fucking economy.

Re: Hay Guyz, guess what happened to me again!

Just got back from a speech meet and i gave 4 speeches on the “Fucking economy” today.
