Part II: The Kid’s Aren’t Alright
Chapter V: Where Do We Go From Here?

Light seeped into the exam room inside the veterinary clinic through the large East facing window as the sun came up early in the morning. The shadow cast by the Venetian blinds cascaded over the four occupants of the room.

Brenda woke first and groaned with discomfort as she felt the soreness from a night’s rest sitting up in a chair tighten around her muscles. She checked on Sarah as she sat forward and smiled when she saw the young girl gently sucking her pacifier. To keep her from being stirred awake, Brenda gently stroked the younger girl’s curly hair till she was sure that Sarah wasn’t going to wake up. As she tilted her head to the right to try and crack her neck her eyes went wide as she looked at the exam table in the center of the room.

Toby and Kisa lay on the exam table with a tissue paper blanket draped over them. Kisa’s bare back was facing toward Brenda; the sheet of tissue paper covered most of her nude form as she clutched the sheet under her armpit. Toby’s arm rested under Kisa’s head and his other arm held her elbow while her hand rested on his bare chest.

Brenda covered her mouth to stifle a giggle as she saw the two naked teens ahead of her. She wondered what they’d done the night before. Had they had sex? Why hadn’t she woken up? Her train of thought brought her to a memory of when she and Molly had found Toby’s stash of pornographic videos, they’d laughed the entire time at how noisy the women were in the movie. She felt sad as she remembered the times she’d spent with Molly; now that she would never see her again the memories were no longer good to think on.

“Hungry.” Sarah told her as she pulled on the older girl’s sleeve to grab her attention from whatever thoughts she was dwelling on.

Brenda looked down at the younger girl with a smile. “Alright honey, let’s get you some food.” She said as she hoisted Sarah up with her when she stood from the chair. With Sarah on her hip she quietly opened the door of the exam room and slipped out into the hallway to the waiting area.

“Hmm, what would you like to eat?” Brenda asked rhetorically as she looked through the viewing glass of the vending machine. She scanned the rows of candy bars, gums, cookies, and crackers, and finally opted to get some cheese crackers for Sarah and a pack of oatmeal cookies for herself.

Toby opened his eyes and shielded them from the shard of light that was stabbing at him through the window. He looked at Kisa and then looked over her to the empty chair where Brenda and Sarah had been. He knew that Sarah and his sister were probably fine, but the protector in him took hold and he repositioned Kisa slowly so that she was no longer covering him, and then he sat up and carefully got off the table.

The floor, much like the rest of the clinic, was freezing. His toes wiggled to generate heat as his bare soles came in contact with the frigid linoleum. A quick search through the pile of clothes on the floor next to the table gave him his clothes back, and he slipped his shoes on with a wince when he bent his injured leg before he too slipped out of the exam room.

Brenda was seated in the waiting room with Sarah on her lap; she smiled as she watched the little girl happily consume the orange crackers divided with a paper thin patch of processed cheese. Sarah seemed to not only enjoy her snack, but also the attention she was getting from the older girl. Brenda periodically stole bites from her own treat, and even shared a few with her younger travel companion from time to time.

“Glad to see you’re safe.” Toby said as he came into the room and spotted the two girls happily eating together.

Brenda smiled. “Glad to see you’re clothed.” She said with a giggle which caused Sarah to also giggle while she clapped her hands happily as though she were a part of some fun game.

Toby sighed and went to the soda machine across from where his sister was seated. “Look, I’m sorry you had to see that. We didn’t mean for things to go that far.” He told her as he made his selection of drink and pressed the corresponding buttons on the machine.

“I may not know a lot about sex, but I’m pretty sure it’s not hard to know that that’s too far. I mean, did you stop to think how gross that is to do when your sister and the little neighbor girl are in the same room?” she asked as she took the wrapper from Sarah’s crackers away from the girl before she could put it in her mouth.

Toby pulled his drink from the bank at the bottom of the machine and opened it and took a drink while he walked over to his sister and sat next to her. “No. I’m sorry you had to see it, but I’m not sorry that what happened last night happened. I love her Bren, I really do.” He told her.

“Please! You just met this girl a few days ago, how could you possibly love her?” Brenda asked.

Toby shrugged and sat back in his chair with a smile on his face as he thought of Kisa. “I can’t explain it. Maybe it’s all the danger around us or something, but it feels like I’ve known her forever. She’s a wonderful girl, she’s sweet and caring and I love her.” He confessed.

Brenda rolled her eyes and scoffed. “That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Just admit that you wanted to have sex with her because you thought she was hot.” She said.

“You don’t have to believe me, but it’s the truth.” He told her before he got up and headed back to the exam room.

Kisa was standing at the window with the parchment blanket wrapped around her. She gave a quick glance back and smiled at Toby before turning her attention back to the window. “It’s eerie how beautiful the day can be despite what’s happening out there.” She said.

Toby went to her and wrapped his arms around her waist and hugging her to him. “Sorry I wasn’t here when you woke up.” He told her.

She looked up at him and kissed his cheek. “I heard what you said out there.” She told him.

“No way could you have heard us out there, from back here.” He said.

Kisa nodded. “Sound travels very well through the air vents.” She said. “Nobody’s ever said anything like that about me.” She told him.

“Nobody’s ever said they loved you?” he asked.

Kisa shook her head. “My family’s the only people that have told me they loved me.” She said.

Toby stroked her hair and kissed her neck softly as she leaned into him and they stood in front of the window watching the new day beginning outside.

The door to the clinic opened nearly an hour later and the four travelers exited and made their way to the car. Everyone was quiet; not wanting to talk about the previous night’s incident for fear that it may spark awkward feelings. That it would take everyone’s minds off the importance of focusing on their surroundings, and leave them unprepared if they were attacked.

“So, what are we gonna do about weapons?” Kisa asked after everyone got settled into the car.

Toby looked out the window first to the left and then the right. “There should be a sporting goods store a few blocks that way.” He said pointing to the right.

Kisa started the car and backed up and drove out of the lot and off to the right to where Toby told her the store was. “What are we gonna get from the sporting goods store?” she asked.

“Maybe they have guns, but if they don’t I’m sure we can find something to defend ourselves.” Toby answered.

The car was silent until they arrived at the sporting goods store. Kisa parked on the sidewalk directly in front of the front doors of the store and everyone got out and headed in. “Let’s try and find what we need and get out of here.” She said as they walked down the main aisle of the store.

The search yielded several knives and machetes, a bow and arrow set, a metal baseball bat and some supplies to make a fire when they camped for the night. They grabbed everything up and put it all in a large duffel bag which Toby carried. The group hurried to the front of the store and back into the car and drove away from the store.

“Now what? Do we have a plan?” Kisa asked.

Toby sighed. “I think we should get out of town. Anywhere we can get to that this…whatever it is, hasn’t gotten to yet.” He said.

“It’s only a matter of time until this thing spreads worldwide.” Brenda chimed in from the backseat.

Kisa sighed and stopped the car. “I don’t think we’re going anywhere.” She said as she slowly turned off the car and raised her hands up to either side of her head so her palms were facing the windshield.

“What are you…” Toby started to ask before his eyes caught sight of what Kisa was looking at, and his hands slowly rose to match hers.

A few yards in front of the car were two black SUV’s parked in the middle of the road. Standing in front of them was a dozen or so soldiers each carrying automatic weapons that were pointed at the car.

“Step out of the car slowly with your hands up or we will fire on you!” one of the soldiers commanded through his megaphone.

“Well, it looks like we’re going with them.” Kisa said.

Toby nodded slowly and opened his door. “Stay close.” He told her. “You too.” He said as he looked back at Brenda and Sarah.

The group exited the car and walked slowly to the front of the car. Toby tried to make sure he was standing enough in front of Kisa, Brenda, and Sarah that he’d be able to protect them if anything happened, but enough out of their way so the soldiers didn’t think they were up to something and open fire.

“Down on the ground!” the man commanded.

Each of them slowly dropped to the ground and laid waiting for the soldiers to come and collect them. Toby looked over at Kisa and forced a smile, and then he looked over at his sister and Sarah and did the same so that they wouldn’t be frightened.

Once the kids were handcuffed they were led to the black SUV’s. Toby was put in one, and Kisa and the younger girls were put in the other. As the cars pulled away both Kisa and Toby looked out the tinted windows at the car the other was in, unsure of who the soldiers were and where they were taking them.
