A warning!!!

Wanted to give a heads’ up here about some ransomware virus that’s making it’s way around the internet. Earlier tonight I had a pop-up that I admit initially weirded me out- it claimed to be from the FBI and that the only way for me to get rid of it was to pay 300 bucks in fines with a disposable credit card known as a MoneyPak or GreenDot Card and that everything I do was being recorded to the bureau. I know it had to be a hoax cause I know people from the FBI and if they had something on you; you’d get someone knocking on your door.

The pop-up would not close normally and I had to go into Task Manager to close it.

I did some research and it turns out it was a virus that somehow got aboard my newer computer. I am working with a Windows 8.1 machine I got for Christmas last year. When something unusual happens to me I tend to do my homework to just make sure if it’s legit or not. Thus far; NOT legit and NOT possible as I know how things work in law enforcement. You’re not going to get a popup ad telling you to pay 300 bucks with a disposable credit card. The thing even listed where you could get a GreenDot Moneypak card… places like Walmart, Seven-Eleven, KMart, et al.

So; I ran Norton it found nothing and I am now running Malwarebytes to find the virus. Just wanted to warn you all about it.

And for the record I was not doing anything illegal- it randomly showed up as I was watching something on YouTube…

Re: A warning!!!

I heard something about that FBI pop-up a while back. I scan my computer once a week or so. so I’m not overly worried. Keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware up to date, scan every week or two and be careful what sites you visit and you should be fine.

Re: A warning!!!

If you’re using Chrome, you can use Chrome’s internal task manager to kill the process and shut the ransomware window without closing the rest of your windows/tabs. Handy.

Re: A warning!!!

I was not using Chrome- not a fan of Google or their OS; I was using Internet Explorer when the thing showed up suddenly on me. It was like a browser pop up and it would not close unless I went into task manager to close it. I immediately ran scans and checked things out.

My scans found something via Malwarebytes and I took care of the situation. The only reason I said anything about this whole thing because of the fact some people MIGHT believe it’s real. If the FBI had anything on you they’d contact you via agents at the door and not ask you to use a disposable credit card or something like tat.

Re: A warning!!!

I had the same thing, My friends grandmother and My teacher had it too…It said you was pedo, I know it did. The FBI moneypak virus is persistent. I think i got raid of it but i am not sure. When it said FBI :police: i was so scared. It would suck to having to explain that i am no Pedophile for 3 to 4 hours in a small room with detective Stabler wanting to kill me.

Re: A warning!!!

The one I got said I was guilty of extremist activity, child pornography, or any other list of charges. The thing creeped me out especially when it had an image of Obama pointing at you like you did something wrong. I knew it was fishy as soon as it happened but it creeped the hell out of me given how technology has changed so much. All I’d been doing was watching some conspiracy theory video on YouTube that some conspiracy theorist friend of mine sent a link to and I just wanted to appease him lol.

I got rid of the virus and I have not seen it since so good riddance but I just had to warn cause it’s been making it’s rounds around the internet.
