So… for the last two years, having moved to a new state, I’ve been reacquiring my teaching credentials and, kicked in the seat by two separate hiring freezes, have had a hell of a hard time doing that, but now, I have done it! I am to start teaching seventh grade English and Reading out here in Las Vegas in just a few weeks! Eek! It’s very new territory to me but the principal, thanks to my spiffy record, recommendations, and credentials, practically jumped over herself to get me into her school and, as there is still a hiring freeze on here, I was quick to give her a happy yes. The position comes with a brand new laptop (possibly a tablet) and a smartboard (which is a ridiculously fun interactive projector. Woo!).
Um… well there isn’t much else to this. I just felt compelled to give a life update, as I’ve been working nearly nonstop on my Masters’ Degree work and acquiring this position and therefore have not had a lot of forum time lately. ^^:

Congrats. Hope you get off to a good start in this latest position and yes, smartboards are cool (unless they happen to stop working when the kids who are using them are trying to give a presentation and you have to watch them struggle awkwardly without it, but I digress).

a smart board /interactive white board is basicly a 5 by 4 foot touch screen for the computer with loads of gadgets they’re pretty cool but the resolution schools run them at is too low to make a decent immage

grin That entirely depends on the resolution of the projector. I’m being given one with an operative max of 1600x1200, which should be fine. My district, as a rule, doesn’t use the back-projected boards, as they’re more expensive and less versatile than their respective parts.

Congrats to you Lin!! I am so happy for you & I know you will do great!! I have wondered why so quiet, now I see why!! Teachers are great people, I know this because my mom is one & her students love her!!

Gotta love towards the middle of that when they start with high school biology “Hey class today we’re gonna be learning about the circulatory system. My name’s Mr. Brad and I’m a douchebag, now on to the lesson.”

I may have gotten the quote distorted but I distinctly heard the word douchebag and laughed my ass off that this was in a state of the art computer technology demonstration vid.

Thanks. My mother is also a teacher, though she teaches elementary, which I would not touch with a fifty foot pole. I actually scoffed at the idea of teaching. It wasn’t until after decided my major that I decided that I wanted to teach, too. Third generation in a row, though. Funny, how that works out.

Your are more than welome Lin!!
My mom began as a special education teacher in elementary school, then moved to teaching 2nd graders, & now teaches college students to become teachers!! I had my mom as my homeroom teacher when I was in the 2nd grade!!

My (paternal) grandmother taught kindergarten for nearly 30 years. My mom teaches at a learning center. With any luck, I’ll be teaching college-level writing in two years.

Lol, I know the feeling, my church has just in the past year learned the ease and interactivity of PowerPoint, when just a year ago, the church was using an overhead, now we have one of those screens that go up/down with a switch, a projector and a pastor young and willing enough to play with technology. We’re looking into being ready to introduce video/audio streaming by the end of the year.

Depends on what kind of overhead projector you sell. His is old, but I have an overhead projector that attaches itself to a ceiling and has USB computer hookups. Stole the thing from high school because otherwise they’re some five hundred to a thousand bucks.
Not my fault they made the projectors backpack shaped and didn’t equip the high school with a single surveillance camera because they needed to cut back on budgeting and didn’t want to get rid of class options.
